Spotlight on Alumni: Mr. Mateso Akou: Part-time lecturer and NEGST alum

Mr. Mateso AkouMr. Mateso Akou first came to NEGST in September 1986. He took a Masters of Divinity in theological studies in 1989. From 1989 to 1991 he took a Masters in Theology, which was a combination of Biblical Studies and Theology. He was also the NEGST alumni chair from 2002 to 2004.

Mateso Akou, after graduating from NEGST, what have you been doing since then?
After NEGST,  I joined the Diguna Missions in Ongata Rongai. I served in Diguna for more than fifteen years, leaving there in June 2002. I was an evangelist in Diguna, responsible for the training and equipping of staff. Other than that, I was the personnel director.

I left Diguna to go and pastor in a francophone church in Nairobi two years. Currently, I am a part time lecturer at NEGST, where I started teaching three years ago in the theological studies department.

Tell us about the most memorable experiences you have had in NEGST.

The biggest lesson that I learnt at NEGST is “humility”. I have learnt to live with people from different cultures, backgrounds and denominations. As a faculty member, I am enjoying going back to the books, since the more I teach, the more I learn. It is a great pleasure to equip the people of God.

What challenges did you face in your ministry work?

When I went to Diguna, I had to give up a lot. The work of Diguna missions is to support churches, missions and individual missionaries with technical assistance, equipment and transportation. In addition, they are involved in radio broadcasting and Christian literature distribution. Diguna did not offer any salary, so it was challenging to go with my family since it meant I had to struggle to meet the needs of my family. Despite the hardships I experienced, I have managed to educate all my children.

Any parting shot for the members of the NEGST community?

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:5

Mr. Mateso Akou is married to Mrs. Hellen Akuo, who did a diploma in Christian ministries at NEGST, as well as a diploma in design and textile. They are blessed with four children, two daughters and two sons, as well as two grandchildren.

On 27th September 1993, a group from Diguna visited my former high school (Kyangulu Secondary School) and presented the Gospel. I received the Lord then! Amazingly, Pr. Mateso Akuo was preaching! He led me to the LORD! From then on, I never met Akuo until I came to NEGST in 2007! Akuo, God bless you as you carry on the work of the LORD.
