What is Africa International University?

Dr CarewDear friends of NEGST,

Many of you have heard about Africa International University (AIU). You are aware that we are vigorously pursuing a university charter, and that we want the impact of NEGST to widen and deepen through AIU. But you’ve been asking for more details.

We propose to form Africa International University as a private Christian university composed of several constituent schools, of which NEGST is the first. The Vision of AIU is Christ centered leaders in Africa educated to transform God’s people and world.

We believe students will come to AIU for several features that set AIU apart. Because AIU is committed to partnering in God’s mission in all of life, we will appeal to prospective students in a variety of fields who want an education that takes biblical Read more »

Children’s Library Now Open

Boys gathering in the libraryA beautiful new children’s library is now open on campus. The kids are already coming in droves to check out books or to spend relaxing hours curled up with a good read on a cushion. More than 60 children have already registered, and the library has quickly become a favorite gathering point. NEGST children from several local schools even held a Bible club sleepover in the library.

The library offers children a peaceful, safe and beautiful place to expand their horizons after school hours and on Saturdays (giving their parents Read more »

Spotlight on Alumni

Interview with Phidel Baraza, MDiv 2006

Phidel BarazaPhidel, can you tell us when you first felt the call to serve children?
After secondary school, I volunteered as a teacher and counselor in a nonprofit school called Riruta Free Methodist Academy, mainly serving children from the nearby slums. The children often came to school scantily dressed and with empty stomachs, making their concentration in class difficult. It was terrible. I spent time listening to their stories, counseling them, and praying with them. I was so delighted to see these young boys and girls give their lives to Christ and devote themselves to their school work. But at the back of my mind I always wondered if Read more »

Need to Read:

Pedagogy of the Oppressed

“When communities are denied education, or when education is manipulated to maintain the status quo of poverty and silence, it becomes a tool for oppression. However, when education becomes a means of wealth creation for all, and when it is used to arouse the critical consciousness that emancipates people for God’s glory, it becomes transformative and redemptive. Freire’s thoughts may not be evangelical, but his methods are worth emulating. I have used his methods to transform communities to the glory of God. His book, Pedagogy of the Oppressed has been valuable to me in this venture.”

A Lesson Learned:

Simon Khaeba
“Understanding the traditional African concept of ‘ancestors’ and the ‘living dead’ allows me to see Christ as the ‘Ideal Ancestor’. This understanding opens me to possibilities of sharing the gospel in a way that a traditional African can relate with.” Simon Khaemba, learned in African Theology, taught by Dr. Nkansah
